Senate President Godswill Akpabio, on Sunday  declared that Ibadan and its people are set for a new era of peace, stability, and prosperity under the leadership of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, describing the monarch as a diligent, experienced, and nationally respected leader whose reign will positively transform the ancient city.

Akpabio spoke during a historic visit to the Bodija House of Oba Ladoja by the leadership of the 10th Senate, an event that attracted principal officers, ranking senators, and former governors from across the country.

Addressing the monarch, Akpabio dismissed any attempt to downplay the importance of Ibadan, insisting that the city ranks among the greatest in Africa. He cited official census figures putting Ibadan’s population at nearly four million people, noting that such demographic strength comes with enormous responsibility and opportunity.

“This is no small place..Ibadan is one of Africa’s great cities, and under your leadership, its people will flourish. Your influence cuts across Nigeria, from the River Niger through the Middle Belt and beyond. As a true nationalist, you will bring stability, progress, and prosperity not only to this city but to the entire state”, the Senate President said.

He praised the palace system as an institution occupied only by men of proven character and service, stressing that Oba Ladoja’s background in politics and governance had prepared him adequately for the demands of the throne.

Akpabio assured the monarch that the National Assembly remained ready to support traditional institutions through legislation where necessary.

“If there is anything we can do, legislatively or otherwise, to support this institution and its vision, we are prepared,” he said, praying for peace, unity, and a lasting legacy for the reign.

Speaking  Oba Ladoja said his reign would be anchored on service, integrity, and collective progress. He described himself as stronger, more experienced, and more determined to deliver development and stability for his people.

“I approach these matters not merely as a politician, but as a citizen deeply invested in the future of my state and country. Leadership is not about money or position alone; it is about patience, service, and integrity”, he said.

Oba Ladoja called for unity among political actors and respect for constitutional processes. He stressed that traditional institutions have vital roles to play in national development, noting that the erosion of monarchs’ authority since colonial times had created gaps in community leadership and grassroots governance.

“Traditional institutions are not competitors to democracy; they are partners,” he said, adding that reintegrating monarchs into governance would strengthen unity, stability, and peace.

Former Kebbi State Governor and Senator representing Kebbi Central, Adamu Aliero, also spoke,  describing the gathering as humbling and symbolic. He said a city of over four million people united under one God reflected the strength of Nigeria’s nationhood, built on faith, peace, and unity.

Aliero, who recalled his long association with Oba Ladoja from their days in the Governors’ Forum and at meetings of the National Council of State and National Economic Council, praised the monarch’s diligence and intellectual depth.

“I have known you to be thorough and comprehensive in addressing national issues,” Aliero said. “I have no doubt that you will lead this kingdom to greater heights.”

He explained that although he missed the coronation ceremony due to being out of the country, the Senate delegation resolved that paying homage to Oba Ladoja must be a priority during their visit, a decision that enjoyed unanimous support among the lawmakers.
