The Vice-Chancellor of KolaDaisi University, Ibadan, Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, SAN, on Thursday urged Nigerian students to pursue education that prioritises character, competence, and problem-solving over the mere acquisition of certificates.
Olatunbosun gave the charge at the ninth Matriculation Ceremony of the university, held in Ibadan, where newly admitted students were formally inducted into the academic community. He warned that academic excellence without sound character is hollow and incapable of addressing the complex challenges facing society.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, universities must go beyond producing graduates with impressive credentials to grooming solution-driven individuals equipped with ethical values, employable skills, and a strong sense of responsibility.
“Excellence without character is hollow. At KolaDaisi University, we are committed to shaping students not merely to earn degrees or secure jobs, but to emerge as innovators and solution-providers who can respond meaningfully to societal needs’’, Olatunbosun declared.
He charged the matriculating students to embrace discipline, resilience, and wise decision-making as they begin a new phase of academic and personal development. While acknowledging the privileges that come with university life, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that such freedoms must be balanced with responsibility and adherence to institutional rules.
The VC highlighted the steady growth of KolaDaisi University in academic programmes, infrastructure, and human capacity. He disclosed that the institution received full accreditation for its programmes from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in February 2025, while results from additional accreditation exercises conducted in December 2025 are being awaited.
Olatunbosun also announced the establishment of the School of Postgraduate Studies, describing it as a major milestone that would strengthen advanced research, innovation, and scholarly excellence across faculties.
He noted that several infrastructural projects, including student hostels and enhanced learning facilities, are ongoing to provide a supportive and enriching learning environment.
Speaking on student development, the Vice-Chancellor said the university places strong emphasis on digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and vocational training. He cited partnerships with international ICT training organisations and entrepreneurship programmes designed to empower students to become job creators rather than job seekers after graduation.
He further warned students against misconduct, social vices, and unethical shortcuts, stressing the institution’s zero tolerance for indiscipline. “Your success will depend not only on your intellect, but on the choices you make daily,” he said.
Olatunbosun expressed appreciation to parents and guardians for entrusting their children to the university, assuring them of the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, moral discipline, and student welfare.
He urged the matriculants to seize available opportunities, uphold good character wherever they go, and commit themselves to purposeful living. “The future belongs to those who prepare for it,” he said, adding that preparation must begin now.
