A Mathematics expert, Mr David Wilson has demystified the problem that many students faced in regards to learning mathematics noting that the foundational studies of math was what made many disliked the subject.
Speaking at the launch of the mathematical programme for students, Mr David Wilson, who is also the Chief Executive Officer [CEO] of MachoMind, stressed that the reason many students hated mathematics has been because they were not taught rightly from the inception and this is largely due to the fact that they were not taught by professionals. MachoMinds is a Mathematics programme for students.
According to him, mathematics is a beautiful subject and area of study which can be known but it must be taught by a professional and in the proper way for students to fall in love with it.
He noted that the problem students faced in Mathematics is the main reason he and his team decided to launch the programme which is aimed at ensuring that students are taught in the proper way right from the foundation as it will determine whether a child will love math or not.
Wilson further stressed that MachoMind programme was just about math, but about making a child five times smarter than a child was before enrolling for the programme.
He maintained that there were several programmes under the MachoMind programme which will help students to be more intellectually capable to tackle mathematics and every other subjects.
He said: “This is a dream come true, not just for me, but for the entire MachoMind team. The vision started not just in 2015, when we launched. The vision started a long time ago, during the time when we were looking for the solution to the problem of math.
“I started teaching since 1999, and at some point during my career as a class teacher, I was asked, so what is the long-standing solution to the problem of math? And it was at that time I started looking for a solution.
“What is really the solution to the problem of math? Somebody said insanity is doing the same thing the same way and expecting a different result. And we have had a lot of children here failing math every year. So what are we supposed to do differently? I think that was what kick-start this vision.
“So, we saw what the Asians were doing, and we felt like, yes, our children can also do this if we can actually invest into it. We made that investment, and in 2015, we launched the MachoMind Abacus, Mental Math and Brain Development Programme for the very first time. We started with one student, and by the other week, they increased to two. By the other week, they increased to four.
“The beautiful thing about the program is that it is not just the solution that we were looking for. It is actually an all-encompassing solution in terms of the transformational power that the program actually carries.
“In a few months’ time, we’re going to be celebrating our 10th year anniversary. I want to say that, over that period of time, we have impacted more than 50,000 children in Lagos, I mean, some in Ibadan here, and in Abuja.
“Over this period of time, we’ve seen children who didn’t like math, fall in love with math. We’ve seen children who didn’t like school, not even just math. Some of them didn’t like going to school. They became enthusiastic learners. We’ve seen children who were at the back when it comes to their grades, and they came forward. We’ve seen children who lacked boldness. We now see children who have self-confidence.
‘’So, the programme has actually transformed the lives of a lot of children, and one of the things that we saw was that we should go back to the very foundation where the children are just starting to learn math, starting to learn numbers. One of the problems we are having is that at the foundational stage of the mathematical development of our children, they are being taught by people who are not even experts.
“So, like, the good book says that if the foundation has been destroyed, what can the righteous do? And then we paraphrase to say, if the foundation is solid, what can’t the righteous do? And that’s what we did. We went to the very foundation where kids are just learning math, and that’s why our programme starts at age three, when the brain is very magnetic. And we actually use this programme to ensure that children are comfortable with numbers, not just comfortable with numbers, they fall in love with math, they excel in math, and much more.
“As a matter of fact, what we have done over the years is to ensure that our programme develops the genius within all of the children.
This is the best time we are coming to Ibadan to ensure that the children in Ibadan, the adults in Ibadan, the professionals in Ibadan, the senior citizens in Ibadan enjoy from the Macho Mind programme, from our Abacus programme to our brain fitness programme to our mind development programmes. These are all the programmes we have brought here in this time and season.
“I want to assure everyone that over the years, we have polished our programme, adjusted our programme, and ensured that our programme is the African speck of the Abacus education all over the world. It means we have created our program such that it will work for any African child, from Nigeria to South Africa to Ghana to Togo to Congo to Tanzania to Ethiopia.
“I want to tell you that we have taught a lot of other African children aside Nigerians. As a matter of fact, we’ve also taught some Asian children who are living in Nigeria, and it’s been amazing.
‘’So one of the promises we are giving to our parents, our children, and the Ibadan community is that be ready to become five times smarter”, he said.
The highlights of the event include, testimonies from parents who have benefited from the programme, competition among the students of MachoMinds and the official launch of the MachoMind programme and the opening of the programme centre.
