The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has called on religious leaders across Nigeria to actively promote ethno-religious tolerance and embrace opposing views as critical steps toward fostering peaceful coexistence and national unity.

Oba Owoade issued this strong admonition during a courtesy visit from the National Chairman of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) Society, Sheikh Dr. Abdullahi Balalau, who was accompanied by members of his National Executive Committee and a large crowd of followers.

Addressing the critical role of religion in Nigeria’s diverse society, the Alaafin emphasised that instigating hatred in the name of religion is detrimental to the nation’s peace. He urged religious leaders to preach the genuine gospel of friendship and sincere love, which he described as “the vehicle that will take mankind to the abode of peace and security.”

Highlighting the voluntary nature of faith, Oba Owoade stressed that the decision to accept salvation must be personal and free from coercion. “Neither the Quran nor the Bible encourages the deployment of coercion or violence as a means of evangelizing unbelievers,” he said. “Killing in the name of religion does not bring glory to God; it is against His command and will never receive His blessing.”

He further implored Nigerians to reject violence cloaked in religion and instead work towards promoting peace and harmony. “Religion need not be the leading cause of death in our country,” he remarked.

Recognising Nigeria’s rich religious tapestry, comprising over 200 million citizens who practice Islam, Christianity, and African Traditional Religions, the Alaafin described religion as a potent force that shapes national identity, politics, culture, and the economy.

Oba Owoade also praised Sheikh Balalau’s unwavering commitment to peace through preaching and teaching nationwide. He described the Islamic leader as “deeply pious” and lauded his efforts to promote peaceful coexistence among Nigerians. “I personally witnessed one of your sermons at a senator’s wedding in Kaduna. It was both interesting and laudable,” the Monarch said.

Alaafin expressed his support and willingness to cooperate with Sheikh Balalau and the JIBWIS Society in advancing unity, peace, and progress in Nigeria.

In his response, Sheikh Balalau expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to meet the Alaafin in person. “I count myself very lucky to be with a Monarch whose reign is uniquely divined and who is absolutely endowed by Allah,” he said.

The Islamic scholar urged the Alaafin to continue seeking divine wisdom and knowledge and assured him that all sincere prayers would be granted by God. He emphasized that leadership is a sacred trust, and obedience to a ruler is earned through passion, honesty, and sincerity of purpose. He advised Oba Owoade to rule with justice and mercy.

Sheikh Balalau prayed for the Alaafin’s good health, divine protection, and long life, while also invoking blessings for unity, peace, and prosperity for Oyo Kingdom, Oyo State, and Nigeria
