The Founder of Lagelu 96.7 FM, Ibadan’s foremost indigenous radio station, His Royal Majesty, Oba Adebayo Akande,has said the station was established to promote Yoruba heritage, amplify local voices, and preserve cultural values rather than compete with other broadcasters.
Oba Akande, who is also the Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadanland and Founder of West Midlands Open University, stated this during the 10th anniversary celebration of Lagelu FM, held in Ibadan.
Delivering the royal father’s address, the station’s Managing Director, Mrs. Atinuke Adetunji, described the decade-long journey of Lagelu FM as “a fulfilled dream rooted in purpose, integrity, and culture.”
“Our ambition was not merely to compete, but to contribute, to the culture, to the economy, and to the conversation that shapes our people. Through the dedication of our management, the creativity of our presenters, and the loyalty of our listeners, Lagelu FM has carried the heartbeat of Ibadan into homes and hearts across the South-West and beyond,” Oba Akande said.
He expressed appreciation to the management team, on-air personalities, and listeners, noting that their collective commitment had sustained the station’s vision over the past decade.
“The journey of ten years reminds us that consistency and integrity are timeless virtues in broadcasting.May Lagelu FM continue to grow stronger, amplifying the true voice of our people for decades to come ,” he added.
In his remarks, the station’s General Manager, Operations, Mr. Tunde Olawuwo, highlighted the unique identity and enduring relevance of Lagelu FM in Nigeria’s media landscape.
“When we started, people asked why another station was needed when Splash FM already existed. But Lagelu FM was not born out of competition; it was born out of conviction. Splash spoke the language of excellence; Lagelu came to speak the language of the people,” Olawuwo said.
The colourful anniversary celebration featured special recognition awards to outstanding staff members, on-air personalities, and community leaders who have contributed to cultural promotion and grassroots development.
Among the honourees were Hon. Remi Oseni, Abimbola Adekanbi, Princess Folashade Abeo-Nurudeen, Rashidi Ayinde Merenge, Femi Adebayo, Ibrahim Chatta, Chief Mutiu Adetunji, and Ajibola Ogunkeyede.
Responding, Hon. Oseni expressed gratitude for the recognition, describing it as “an honour that inspires greater service.”
“Sometimes people see what you do but may not acknowledge it,” he said, adding that, “Gestures like this motivate us to do more. I appreciate Lagelu FM for this recognition and their continuous service to the public.”
Another awardee, Abimbola Adekanbi, said the honour was humbling and encouraging, noting that “living a modest life and seeing people recognised encourages us to contribute more to society.”
The event, attended by dignitaries, media professionals, and cultural icons, featured captivating performances by Apala legend Haruna Ishola and Fuji star Taye Currency, as guests celebrated a decade of indigenous broadcasting excellence and cultural pride.
