A 300-level student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has died after being shot during a sign-out ceremony held in defiance of a university ban.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Ultramodern Wazo Market in Ogbomoso. According to the institution’s management, the deceased, identified as Marvelous Olanrewaju Babalola of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was among a group of students who staged the celebration at the market’s football pitch, despite the school’s 2023 prohibition of such activities within and outside the campus.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Babalola was shot at the venue and later attempted to ride away on his motorbike before collapsing. He was found unresponsive and subsequently taken to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital morgue.

Upon receiving a distress call, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs alerted the Oyo State Police Command in Ogbomoso, prompting the deployment of officers from the Monitoring Unit and the Area Command to the scene. Items recovered from the victim helped confirm his identity through university records.

The university said it is working closely with the police as investigations continue, and the family of the deceased has been informed.

In a statement, Registrar Mrs. Olayinka  Balogun expressed the institution’s condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late student, praying for his eternal rest.
