In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor congratulated the Muslim Ummah and Christians for witnessing the sacred periods, urging them to deepen their commitment to the service of God and humanity.

Makinde described the coincidence of the Ramadan and Lent fasting seasons as a divine reminder of the enduring values of love, unity and religious harmony. He noted that the overlapping observances present a unique opportunity for adherents of Islam and Christianity to reflect on shared principles of sacrifice, discipline and compassion.

According to the governor, God Almighty is once again using the convergence of the two holy seasons to teach important lessons about peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among people of different faiths. He stressed that the significance of this moment should not be lost on the faithful throughout the fasting period and beyond.

Makinde lauded Muslims and Christians in Oyo State for their longstanding culture of harmony and cooperation, which he said has contributed significantly to the state’s steady progress. He commended religious leaders and congregations for working hand in hand and supporting his administration since its inception in 2019.

The governor urged adherents of both religions to use the 2026 Ramadan and Lent periods to offer fervent prayers and supplications for Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole, especially for leaders at all levels of government. He emphasised the power of collective prayer and moral renewal in fostering peace, stability and development.

“As you observe these sacred seasons, I encourage you to renew your dedication to the service of God and to making positive impact on humanity,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.

Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of the people of Oyo State. He assured residents that his government would continue to pursue policies and programmes designed to improve their living conditions and promote inclusive growth.

The governor expressed optimism that the spiritual exercises of fasting, prayer and charity would strengthen the bonds of unity among residents and inspire greater acts of kindness and understanding across religious divides.

Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, and Lent, observed by Christians, are periods marked by fasting, repentance and reflection. Their concurrence this year has drawn messages of goodwill from leaders across the country, highlighting the importance of interfaith harmony in Nigeria’s diverse society.
