The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, is set to confer prestigious chieftaincy titles on two eminent Nigerians in Oyo town on Sunday, December 21, in a ceremony expected to draw traditional rulers, political leaders and cultural enthusiasts from across the country.

The honourees are a former governor of Zamfara State and ex-senator, Abubakar Yari, and businessman Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, Senator Yari will be installed as the Obaloyin of Yorubaland, a title traditionally associated with love, compassion, justice and mediation, as well as the symbolic role of bridging the physical and spiritual realms.

Seyi Tinubu, on his part, will be conferred with the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland, a position regarded as that of a custodian of Yoruba values, unity and cultural heritage.

The palace said the honours reflect the Alaafin’s recognition of individuals who have distinguished themselves in public service, enterprise and contributions to national development, while also demonstrating respect for Yoruba culture and traditions.

Durojaiye noted that beyond ceremonial recognition, the titles carry significant responsibilities, including the promotion and preservation of Yoruba customs, language and history, as well as offering counsel to the Alaafin on matters affecting the kingdom and the wider Yoruba nation.

He added that the new chiefs are also expected to play active roles in fostering unity among the Yoruba people at home and in the diaspora, while supporting initiatives in education, youth development and social welfare.

“The Alaafin-in-Council considers character, service and capacity for leadership before conferring any chieftaincy title. These honours are not merely symbolic but come with obligations to the people and the throne,” the statement said.

The installation ceremony, to be held at the ancient Oyo palace, is expected to feature traditional rites, cultural displays and the presence of high-ranking chiefs, members of the Oyo Mesi, as well as guests from within and outside the state.

The Alaafin, one of the most revered traditional rulers in Yorubaland, has in recent times emphasised the need for traditional institutions to support peace, good governance and social cohesion in Nigeria.

Sunday’s event is also expected to highlight the interface between tradition and modern leadership, as the palace continues to recognise individuals whose influence and activities resonate beyond their immediate communities.

The Oyo kingdom, regarded as the cradle of Yoruba civilisation, remains a focal point for cultural renaissance and the preservation of age-long traditions, with the Alaafin playing a central role in sustaining its historical legacy.
