In his message on the maiden edition of the newsletter, Prof. Okebukola, who is also the Founder of ACSP, urged the association’s leadership and members to position the body as a standard-bearer in the cybersecurity industry, one that defines best practices, builds capacity, and safeguards Africa’s digital frontiers.

“This marks the beginning of what I believe will be a long and impactful journey in shaping the cybersecurity landscape of our nation and continent,” he said.

He emphasised that ACSP must become the first port of call for governments, institutions, businesses, and individuals in need of cybersecurity expertise and guidance.

“Let ACSP not only protect systems but also inspire confidence, trust, and pride in African cybersecurity professionals. We must use this moment to lead from the front, setting benchmarks for professionalism, ethics, and innovation,” he said.

Okebukola also stressed the need for an urgent and strategic rollout of capacity-building initiatives and professional programmes to give the association national, regional, and global relevance.

In his comment, President of ACSP, Professor Isaac Odesola, described the current digital age as a double-edged sword, offering innovation and opportunity while exposing users to unprecedented threats.

“We now live in a world where the digital realm is as real as the physical one.Unlike physical theft, cybercrime can happen invisibly, across borders, and in seconds. That is why our mission at ACSP matters,” he said.

Odesola revealed that global cybercrime damages are projected to reach $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, underscoring the need for stronger professional networks and public awareness.

“What this really means is that your research, personal data, family’s savings, or institutional credibility could be at risk,” he said.

Referencing Proverbs, he added:“Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. Our goal is to help you see the net before it ensnares you. This newsletter is your lens of awareness and your shield of preparation.”

Editor of The Cyber Watch and Vice President (South-West) of ACSP, Professor Olusola Ladokun, said the timing of the newsletter’s launch, during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, was intentional and symbolic of the association’s commitment to proactive vigilance.

Ladokun, who also serves as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Lead City University, stated that cyberattacks are no longer a matter of “if” but “when.”

“Our task is to ensure that when the moment comes, we are not victims, but victors. That’s why I’m excited to welcome readers to the inaugural issue of The Cyber Watch,” she said.

She described the newsletter as a practical, community-driven resource, promising key features such as actionable Intel – concise updates on trending cyber threats, practical tactics, and community voice.

Calling for reader engagement, Ladokun added:“This is your platform. We want to hear from you: What cyber issues keep you up at night? What tips have worked for you in class, research, or everyday life? Let’s learn together. Let’s stay safe together. Stay vigilant.”
