The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba (Dr) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa I), has called on adherents of Islam and Christianity to take advantage of the ongoing fasting seasons to pray fervently for the peace, unity and progress of Nigeria.
The monarch made the appeal in a press statement issued on Wednesday to mark the commencement of the Ramadan and Lenten fasting periods. The statement was signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Chief Ayoade Solomon Olugbemiga.
Oba Ladoja noted that the simultaneous observance of Ramadan by Muslims and Lent by Christians presents a unique spiritual moment for the country, urging the faithful of both religions to embrace the opportunity to seek divine intervention for Nigeria, particularly at a time the nation is grappling with numerous socio-economic and security challenges.
According to the paramount ruler, the essence of both Ramadan and Lent goes beyond abstinence from food and drink, stressing that the sacred periods symbolise sober reflection, forgiveness, kindness, discipline, peaceful coexistence and spiritual renewal.
“The convergence of Ramadan and Lenten periods is not a mere coincidence but a divine arrangement to show the whole world the need for unity, togetherness, love, religious tolerance and mutual understanding among the religious faithful,” the monarch said.
He emphasised that fasting should not be reduced to mere physical deprivation, but must also involve abstaining from indecent behaviour, hate speech, bitterness and all forms of conduct capable of undermining societal harmony.
“Fasting period is not only abstaining from food and drinks but also from indecent ways of life, ill speeches, hatred among others,” he further stressed.
The first-class monarch urged Nigerians to intensify prayers for leaders at all levels, Ibadanland, the Yoruba race and the country as a whole. He expressed concern over the state of insecurity and other pressing national issues, noting that sustained prayers and collective commitment to righteousness are critical to overcoming the current trials facing the nation.
Oba Ladoja particularly appealed to residents of Ibadanland to use the sacred seasons to pray for enduring peace, economic rejuvenation and security of lives and property. He underscored the importance of religious harmony in fostering development and strengthening communal bonds across ethnic and faith lines.
The royal father also expressed appreciation for the unwavering support he has received from religious leaders and adherents since his enthronement as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. He described the cooperation between traditional authority and religious institutions as vital to the stability and progress of the ancient city.
While urging them not to relent in their prayers, the monarch reaffirmed his commitment to promoting unity and peaceful coexistence among all residents, irrespective of religious affiliation.
The statement added with a renewed call for Nigerians to draw closer to God during the fasting seasons and to allow the core values of love, tolerance and discipline to guide their actions beyond the sacred periods.
