As Oyo State prepares to mark its 50th anniversary, Governor Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday  emphasised the importance of recognising and rewarding individuals who have contributed significantly to the development of the state since its creation.

Speaking during the inauguration of an 11-member planning committee at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, Governor Makinde described the golden jubilee as a historic milestone that calls for both reflection and celebration.

Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976, and the upcoming celebrations are expected to highlight its journey over the past five decades, paying tribute to its past leaders, cultural heritage, and socio-economic progress.

“Fifty is a major milestone,  in the life of individuals, institutions, and states. It calls for celebration, for us to roll out the drums and acknowledge how far we’ve come, regardless of the current situation in the country,” the governor said.

Makinde stressed that beyond festivities, the anniversary offers an opportunity to honour past and present contributors to the state’s growth, including civil servants, political leaders, and public figures who have served with dedication and sacrifice.

“We must use this moment to reach out to those who have served our state. We must recognise, appreciate, and offer them tokens of our gratitude. Even those who are no longer with us,  their families will be recognised on their behalf,” he added.

The governor made it clear that the celebration will be non-partisan, focused on merit and genuine service to the state.

“Political parties will come and go, but our state remains. This celebration is about our shared history and collective achievements, not politics,” he said.

Governor Makinde tasked the planning committee with the responsibility of delivering a befitting celebration that reflects the values and aspirations of the people of Oyo State.

Chairman of the committee, Saheed Akinade-Filani, assured the governor and the people of Oyo State of the committee’s readiness to discharge its duties with commitment and integrity.

“We consider it a privilege to be part of this historic moment. We will carry out the assignment diligently and ensure the 50th anniversary is celebrated in a way that makes every indigene proud,” he said.
