The Oyo State Police Command has detained a member of its Special Response Squad and the team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, over the alleged extortion of ₦300,000 from a resident in Ibadan.

The command disclosed this on Wednesday in a statement issued by its Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

According to the statement, the action followed allegations circulated online, including a transfer receipt shared by an individual identified as Jesugbemi, accusing operatives of the Special Response Squad of extorting the money.

“In respect of the transfer receipt circulated by @Hon. Jesugbemi and others alleging extortion by operatives of the Special Response Squad, the Oyo State Police Command immediately initiated a comprehensive investigation into the allegation,” Ayanlade said.

He noted that after what he described as a diligent internal review, the officer directly involved in the alleged misconduct was identified and defaulted. The officer is currently in detention pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.

The team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has also been formally queried in line with established regulations, the statement added.

“It is important to categorically state that the entire sum of ₦300,000 alleged to have been extorted has been fully recovered,” Ayanlade said.

The police spokesman urged the affected individual to come forward to reclaim the recovered money and voluntarily make a formal statement to enable the command to conclude its investigation and impose appropriate disciplinary sanctions.

In a related development, Ayanlade disclosed a second case involving officers stationed at Zenith Bank, Bodija, Ibadan, who were alleged to have extorted ₦30,000 from a member of the public.

“The officers concerned have equally been identified and detained for proper internal investigation and orderly room trial. The affected individual has formally lodged a complaint, and the matter is being processed in accordance with due disciplinary procedures,” he said.

The command reiterated its commitment to professional conduct and accountability, stressing that acts of extortion and other forms of misconduct would not be condoned under any guise.

It encouraged members of the public whose rights may have been violated or who have been subjected to extortion to promptly provide actionable information and credible evidence to aid investigations.

The development comes amid sustained calls for greater transparency and internal discipline within law enforcement agencies, as authorities seek to rebuild public trust and reinforce ethical standards in policing across the state.
