The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Wednesday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran journalist and trailblazing media executive, Dr Doyinsola Abiola, who died on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the age of 82.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, described the late Dr. Abiola as a media icon, confident professional, dogged fighter, patriot, and democrat whose legacy transcends journalism into the heart of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Ajayi recalled that Dr Abiola was not just a towering figure in media but also a courageous woman who played a pivotal role in the struggle for the revalidation of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was controversially annulled. As the wife of Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the presumed winner of that election, Doyin Abiola was considered one of the heroines of the June 12 movement.
“Even if she were not related to Chief Abiola, she would most likely have still stood for the June 12 mandate, given her deep ideological belief in justice and democracy,” Ajayi noted.
Afenifere highlighted Doyin Abiola’s principled stance on merit and fairness, recounting how she rejected a role as ‘Woman Editor’ at the then-prominent Daily Times, opting instead to be assessed on merit. Her insistence on equal opportunity led her to eventually become the Group Features Editor of the paper — a role she fulfilled with distinction.
Her trailblazing career continued as she stepped into the position of Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of the Concord Group of Newspapers, succeeding media veteran Chief Henry Odukomaiya. In that capacity, she shattered glass ceilings and proved that leadership in journalism knows no gender.
“She was a woman of integrity and a role model for generations of women who later entered the media profession and the broader advocacy for women’s empowerment,” Afenifere stated.
The group commiserated with the Abiola and Aboaba families, the people of Ogun State, and all who were touched by Dr. Doyin Abiola’s impactful life and career
“Her legacy of professionalism, courage, and commitment to democratic ideals will endure. Nigeria has lost a rare gem, but her footprints remain indelible,” the statement added.
