The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED), has reassured the public that the recent transfer of its Teaching Hospital Complex in Akure to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) will not negatively impact the university’s independence or academic activities.

Addressing concerns and rumours surrounding the transfer, UNIMED’s Public Relations Officer, Isaac Oluyi, clarified that the ceding of the Akure Teaching Hospital branch to FUTA is a strategic move designed to support the launch of FUTA’s medical science programs. Meanwhile, UNIMED continues to prepare its main teaching hospital to cater fully to its students’ training needs.

‘’The ceding of the Akure branch of the Teaching Hospital to FUTA is intended to support the launch of medical science programs at FUTA while UNIMED prepares its main teaching hospital. UNIMED remains a rapidly advancing medical institution equipped with facilities sufficient to cater to its students’ training needs’’, Oluyi said.

“As a rapidly growing medical institution, UNIMED has sufficient facilities to meet its students’ needs at its teaching hospital in Ondo,” Oluyi stated. He further emphasised that collaboration is essential for a modern university to thrive. UNIMED remains committed to partnering with local and international institutions to deliver top-quality medical and health sciences education.

The university dismissed fears that the transfer was intended to weaken UNIMED, highlighting the strong commitment of Ondo State Governor, Hon. (Dr.) Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, who has consistently provided inspiring leadership and robust financial support to the institution.

Under the visionary leadership of Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, an expert in Paediatrics and Child Health, UNIMED is poised to continue working closely with the Ondo State Government to fulfill its mandate of excellence in teaching, research, and community service.

‘’UNIMED remains a source of pride for Ondo State, firmly established as a leading center for medical education and health sciences’’, he added.
