Available information and literature have revealed that UNIMED is  the first institution in Ondo State to achieve  a network of high-tech stations for air monitoring research. According to Jenrola Akintomide, the Equipment Installation Team Lead, “in fact, many leading universities in Nigeria are yet to attain this feat”.

Explaining the process leading to the installation of the latest equipment, Akintomide said,

“we completed the equipment installation (in conjunction with IQAir in the USA) on May 15, 2025. You would recall that we installed the first set of equipment in August 2024, and we have continued to maintain the equipment for smooth operations till date” . He added that “the existing and the new equipment will work in synergy as a network”.

The network of air monitoring research stations, according to him, will enhance wider and efficient coverage of air quality and other environmental phenomena. He said “the generated real-time dataset will enable the public and relevant stakeholders to gain insight into the temporal and spatial distribution of air quality dynamics in Ondo City and other urban areas in western Nigeria”.

Akintomide concluded that ” the information generated would assist the university, healthcare experts, and policymakers in developing targeted public and environmental health strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of air pollution on human health”.

The project was supervised by Prof. C. J. Olowookere, while O. S. Òkè worked as Field Assistant on the project, with the equipment supplied by  IQAir Foundation, USA.
