Ayobami Wasiu Lam Adesina, a Professor of Economic Development Planning and eldest son of the late former Oyo State governor, Alhaji Lam Adesina, on Wednesday declared his intention to contest for the governorship of Oyo State, promising to prioritise education, healthcare, agriculture, and rural development.
The declaration came during the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Guest Forum in Ibadan, where Adesina outlined his vision for a transformative leadership aimed at improving the welfare of Oyo residents.
“The future of Oyo State must be deliberately shaped to surpass its present condition. Government policies must focus on improving the quality of life for our people. We have to strive for a future that is better than our present,” Adesina said, emphasising the need for proactive and visionary governance.
Recounting his personal experience, the professor noted the impact of free education policies introduced during the administration of the late Chief Bola Ige. He said such policies must not only be preserved but strengthened to meet contemporary educational needs. “I benefited from Bola Ige’s free education. If I become governor, I will improve the quality of education provided to our children, ensuring access to affordable and effective schooling across Oyo State,” he added.
On healthcare, Adesina underscored the urgent need to revamp the state’s system, guaranteeing access to quality medical services and basic necessities for all citizens. He cited his Ayo Lam Care Foundation as an example of efforts already underway to support vulnerable groups, including individuals facing health challenges across the state.
Adesina also promised to invest in agriculture and rural development, stressing that sustainable governance requires policies that empower farmers, enhance food security, and stimulate economic growth in the rural areas, which form the backbone of Oyo State’s economy.
Highlighting his expertise in economic planning, he said leadership must focus on human capital development, creating opportunities that improve lives and reduce inequalities. He called for a collaborative approach between government, civil society, and communities to ensure that policies are inclusive and impactful.
The professor’s entry into the governorship race adds a new dimension to Oyo State’s 2027 elections. Leveraging his family legacy and professional experience, he aims to implement long-term development strategies that build on past successes while addressing present challenges.
“Leadership is about creating opportunities for all and leaving a lasting impact,” Adesina said, urging citizens and stakeholders to engage actively in shaping the state’s future.
Earlier, the NUJ Chairman, Akeem Abass, said the forum provides a platform for politicians and stakeholders to present their plans and aspirations to the public, enabling citizens to make informed choices ahead of the 2027 elections.
