A motor boy was killed and three other occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries on Wednesday after a cement-laden trailer suffered brake failure and crashed along Mile 6, Ajebo Road in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The lone crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. at Agbedejobi Village when the trailer, which was not carrying a registration number, developed a mechanical fault while descending a bridge.
According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the trailer experienced brake failure and, in an attempt to avoid colliding with a vehicle ahead, veered off the road into a ditch before crashing onto a railway track. The impact caused the vehicle to spill its cement load into a nearby bush.
TRACE said one of the trailer’s motor boys died instantly in the crash, while another sustained a fractured arm. The driver and another occupant also suffered varying degrees of injuries.
The deceased and the injured victims were evacuated to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, for further medical attention.
Rescue operations were jointly carried out by officials of TRACE and the Nigeria Police Force.
Reacting to the incident, TRACE expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The agency also urged motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained before embarking on any journey. It further warned against overloading vehicles, stressing that poor maintenance and mechanical failures remain major causes of preventable road crashes.
