The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Oyo State chapter, has called for sustained efforts toward gender equality and greater inclusion of women in leadership positions.
The call was made in a statement issued to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), congratulating women in Oyo State and across Nigeria for their resilience and contributions to national development.
The statement, jointly signed by the Chairperson of the association, Omolola Alamu, and its Secretary, Eniola Adeaga, described the occasion as an opportunity to recognise the achievements of women across different sectors of society.
According to the association, this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” which emphasises accelerating progress through economic empowerment, reflects the aspirations of Nigerian women seeking greater opportunities and inclusion.
Oyo NAWOJ commended women making significant contributions in agriculture, technology, governance and the informal sector, noting that they remain critical drivers of economic growth and social development in the state.
The association said despite existing challenges, women in the state continue to demonstrate resilience, innovation and enterprise.
It added that women are steadily breaking barriers and redefining possibilities in various spheres of life.
“From the bustling markets of Dugbe to emerging technology hubs in Bodija, women are making notable strides and contributing meaningfully to economic and social development,” the statement noted.
While celebrating the progress recorded by women, the association stressed the need to ensure their full participation in leadership and decision-making processes that shape the nation’s future.
Oyo NAWOJ also commended female journalists for their commitment to amplifying the voices of vulnerable groups and promoting accountability through responsible journalism.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to deploying the power of the media to advocate policies and initiatives that promote the rights, welfare and advancement of women in society.
