NUT orders teachers’ withdrawal from Oriire schools over abductions

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all teachers in public schools across Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to stay away from classrooms following the abduction of many students and teachers in the area.

The union said the decision became necessary in the wake of the incident, which has left both the victims and their abductors yet to be accounted for as of Tuesday, when this report was filed.

Describing the abduction as unfortunate, the union said the development had left a deep psychological impact on teachers within the local government area.

The NUT  disclosed that its national leadership had issued a directive mandating teachers in Oriire LGA to withdraw from school activities with immediate effect.

In a formal notice issued by the Oyo State wing of the union, teachers were instructed to comply with the directive starting Tuesday, May 26, 2026, until further notice.

The letter was signed by the Oyo State Secretary of NUT, Olukayode Salami.

“On the firm directive of the National Leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Oyo State wing of the Union hereby directs teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the State to stay away from the schools commencing from Tuesday, 26 May 2026 till further notice,” the statement read.

  1. Let us be more accountable in our reportage for posterity sake! The complete statement is….to stay away from classrooms following the killing of 2 teachers, abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in the area. The total nunber of affected persons in that incident is 48. Your reporting made it look like 46 persons
