The Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) will, on Wednesday, hold its South-West webinar on elections, conflict and security as well as inaugurate new state chapters across the zone to strengthen professional collaboration and expand its activities.
The virtual event, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. via Zoom, has as its theme: “Elections, Conflict and Security: Reappraising the Role of Media and Communications.”
According to the organisers, the webinar is designed to provide a platform for scholars, media professionals, researchers and communication practitioners to examine the role of the media and strategic communication in promoting peaceful elections, managing conflicts and enhancing national security.
The Vice-Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja, Prof. Biodun Adeniyi, will deliver the keynote address, while the National President of ACSPN, Prof. Rotimi Olatunji, is expected as the Special Guest of Honour.
The event will be moderated by the South-West Vice-President of the association, Mr. Lanre Arogundade.
Other discussants include the Dean, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Lagos State University, Prof. Jide Jimoh; Dr. Adeola Oyeleke of the Mass Communication Programme, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; and Dr. Jide Johnson of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos.
They are expected to examine contemporary issues surrounding election communication, conflict management, media ethics, misinformation and the role of communication professionals in strengthening democratic governance.
A major highlight of the programme will be the inauguration of selected ACSPN state chapters in the South-West, a move the association said would deepen its presence across the region and promote greater collaboration among communication scholars and professionals.
The inauguration is also expected to enhance research, mentorship, professional development and policy engagement, while advancing the association’s commitment to strengthening communication scholarship and practice in Nigeria.
