Dominion University, Ibadan, has named the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) Worldwide, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, as the guest lecturer for its fourth convocation ceremony.
The convocation lecture, scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026, will focus on the theme, “Such As I Have: The Graduate, Capacity and the Responsibility to Transform Society.”
The Chancellor of the university, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing journalists at the institution, located along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, ahead of the convocation activities.
Adelakun said Okonkwo was selected in recognition of his decades of experience in ministry, his background in banking, his record of institution-building and his commitment to youth development.
According to him, the TREM leader has consistently demonstrated a passion for empowering young people and preparing them for leadership and service to society.
“He has been in ministry for decades. He was a banker. He has built institutions. He is passionate about the young ones and their education. He organises essay competitions for young people. He has a burden for the young ones,” Adelakun said.
The chancellor said the university attached importance to exposing students to accomplished individuals whose experiences could inspire them to apply their education and abilities to addressing societal challenges.
He stressed that university education should go beyond the acquisition of certificates to equip graduates with the capacity, values and sense of responsibility needed to contribute to national development.
Adelakun said Dominion University was committed to producing graduates with sound academic knowledge, moral values and the fear of God, adding that investment in young people was essential to Nigeria’s progress.
He noted that faith-based institutions had a responsibility to complement government efforts in education by developing the human capacity required to manage the country’s resources and tackle its development challenges.
The fourth convocation programme will feature a convocation dinner on Thursday, October 22, followed by the lecture and a novelty football match on Friday, October 23.
The award of degrees and prizes is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, while the convocation thanksgiving service will hold on Sunday, October 25.
A total of 140 students are expected to graduate, including 27 who earned first-class degrees. Nadia Rita Bayakly of the Department of Mass Communication emerged as the best graduating student, with a cumulative grade point average of 5.00 out of 5.00.
