The Vice Chancellor of Precious Cornerstone University [PCU], Ibadan, Prof. Timothy Adejumo, has said entrepreneurship remains the solution to myriads of problems bedeviling the country.
Adejumo made the call during the ongoing three-day entrepreneurship week 2025 of the university with the theme: ‘’Spark Innovation Ignites Entrepreneurship’’.
The programme, which was organised by the university’s Entrepreneurship Centre, was held at the institution’s auditorium. The event focuses on an interactive entrepreneurial session, innovation master-classes and student business exhibition as well as skill showcase.
The VC, who was represented by the Librarian, Dr Olajide Afolabi, said it was imperative for Nigerian youths to embrace entrepreneurship in order to provide solutions to the nation’s problems.
The VC said: ‘’Entrepreneurship is the solution to Nigeria’s problems, because necessity is the mother of invention, but I want to say that even innovation is the father of solution. Whatever problem you have in this world has to be solved. Nigeria today has problems, and if these problems are not addressed, they will remain there. The doers are better than the mere talkers. The policy makers can make all the policies but who are those implementer? These are the entrepreneurs who see these little opportunities and convert them into valuable products’’.
Adejumo said the programme was part of the university’s mission in making their products all-round graduates by equipping with the 21st century entrepreneurial and marketable skills. The VC added that entrepreneurship today had gone beyond blue-collar jobs.
In his remarks, the Director of Entrepreneurship Centre of the university, Dr.Gbemi Moses Sodeinde, said the programme was to create awareness among the students on the essence of entrepreneurship.
Sodeinde said: ‘’It is to make the students solution providers. We have people from the industry and entrepreneurs coming and sharing their stories and experiences. It is to give the students the necessary platforms to showcase their skills and the ideas’’.
In his lecture, an entrepreneur and patent holder, who was the guest lecturer, Mr Niyi Kolade, charged the students to unleash the entrepreneurship spirit in them, adding innovation brings about solutions.
‘’Entrepreneurship is about solving problems, and making a difference. Entrepreneurship will transform society. Society is the burden of entrepreneurs. It is your responsibility. You must move from concepts to commercialisation. Try to be entrepreneurs, not businessmen. It is about impacts. It is the spirit of creativity. There are many things to be created’’, he said.
While speaking on the theme: “Entrepreneurship and You”, the guest speaker, who is a fabric merchant, Mrs Racheal Salami, urged the participants to exhibit the right spirit. Salami said with the right spirit and strong will, they would transform society.
‘’Don’t limit yourself. Don’t look down on anyone. Our education must reflect in our entrepreneurship journey. Look inward. You are the most important person we need on this journey’’, she said.
