Swift response from the Oyo State Fire Services Agency on Monday night prevented what could have been a major disaster after three shops went up in flames at Kudeti Street, opposite SA Filling Station, Jericho, Ibadan.
The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. when sparks from high-tension cables ignited combustible materials in the prefabricated bamboo shops built along the fence of a nearby estate.
According to the Acting Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS), Mr. Bamidele Samsudeen, who led the operation, firemen quickly mobilised to the scene following a distress call. Their efforts restricted the inferno from spreading to nearby residential buildings and other properties.
“No casualty was recorded, and properties worth millions of naira were saved due to the timely intervention of our officers,” Samsudeen stated.
The Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, commended the personnel for their swift action. He, however, warned residents to always maintain safe clearance from both high and low-voltage electrical lines, especially during the ember months when fire outbreaks are common.
Adebayo urged members of the public to promptly report fire incidents with accurate addresses to enable quick response.
