A granddaughter of former Osun State Governor and pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, Dr. Opeyemi Ilori, has emerged the best graduating student in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (UI).
Dr. Ilori was among the 136 medical and dental graduates of the university formally inducted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) on Monday at a ceremony held at the Civic Centre, Ibadan.
The event attracted eminent personalities, including her mother and Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Temitope Ilori; her father, Engr. Babatunde Olugbenga Ilori; the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the MDCN, Dr. Fatima Kyari; the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale; and her grandfather, Chief Bisi Akande, who also serves as the university’s Pro-Chancellor.
Expressing her delight, Dr. Opeyemi Ilori said:“I feel deeply grateful to God for the privilege to serve humanity and to have been found worthy to become a doctor. I’m happy to make my grandfather proud and to graduate from such a prestigious institution. I also appeal to the government to improve the welfare and remuneration of doctors and other health practitioners.”
Equally elated, her mother, Dr. Temitope Ilori, described her daughter’s feat as a remarkable achievement.
“I’m so elated to see my daughter graduate, and with a prize as the best in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. As a medical doctor and alumna of this great university myself, I know it’s no mean feat to graduate from UI, let alone with a prize”, she said.
Chief Akande, while congratulating the new doctors, commended their dedication and resilience. “Congratulations to all the inductees,” he said.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Fatima Kyari, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, and the Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. Temitope Ogundiran, charged the new doctors to uphold the ethics of the medical profession, maintain integrity, and pursue excellence in service to humanity.
