Alaafin celebrates Mrs.Margaret Shonekan at 84, hails her legacy of service

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba (Engr.) Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has extolled the virtues of Chief Mrs. Margaret Shonekan, wife of the late Head of the Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan, describing her as “a beacon of grace, service, and inspiration to generations of Nigerians.”

In a heartfelt congratulatory message issued by his Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Bode Durojaiye, on the occasion of her 84th birthday, Oba Owoade expressed deep admiration and respect for the octogenarian’s enduring contributions to education, women’s empowerment, and community development.

“Today, as we gather to honour your extraordinary life, I am reminded of the indelible mark you have left on our great kingdom and the world at large.Your dedication to the advancement of education, women’s empowerment, and community development has inspired countless individuals, including myself, and has contributed significantly to the growth and prosperity of our beloved Oyo State,” the Alaafin said.

Describing Chief Mrs. Shonekan as “a shining example of resilience, kindness, and generosity,” the monarch praised her for a lifetime of selfless service, particularly her advocacy for the vulnerable and marginalised.

“You have demonstrated that age is merely a number, and that one’s passion for making a difference knows no bounds,” he added.

The Alaafin prayed that God would continue to bless Chief Mrs. Shonekan with good health, strength, and wisdom to continue her life of impact, urging younger generations to emulate her legacy of discipline, compassion, and civic responsibility.

“As you mark this milestone birthday, may your life continue to be a beacon of hope and inspiration to future generations of Oyo sons and daughters.On behalf of the Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, I wish you a joyous 84th birthday celebration filled with love, peace, and fulfilment,” the monarch said.

The message, which resonated with admiration and royal warmth, underscored the Alaafin’s long-standing recognition of Chief Mrs. Shonekan’s role in nation-building, philanthropy, and cultural preservation ,  a tribute befitting her status as one of Nigeria’s enduring matriarchs of grace and service.
