In a bid to inspire the next generation of leaders, a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Dr. Dawood Olalere, on Thursday called on successful Nigerians to return to their alma maters and invest in nurturing young minds.
The lawmaker, who represents Ibadan North West State Constituency, made the appeal during the “Catch–Them–Young Initiative” campaign held at Chief Agbaje Memorial Primary School, Ayeye-Agbaje, Ibadan.
The programme, designed to motivate pupils and promote talent development, underscores the critical role of mentorship and education in nation-building.
Speaking to students, Dr. Olalere, fondly known as “D-Al-Ameen,” highlighted the significance of public education in shaping careers and lives. Drawing on his personal journey, he recounted attending public schools from elementary through tertiary levels, eventually earning a degree in Medical Laboratory Science from University College Hospital in conjunction with the University of Ibadan, a master’s degree from Ambrose Alli University, and an honorary doctorate in Public Health. He also owns a medical diagnostic facility, D-Al-Ameen Diagnostic Hospital, and now serves as a lawmaker.
“My story did not start with wealth or privilege. I began just like you, in public schools. With focus, dedication, and discipline, I was able to achieve my dreams. You can do even more,” he told the pupils. He urged successful Nigerians to return to their former schools to provide guidance, resources, and hope to children, stressing that mentorship is key to shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
In his remarks, Hon. Ayoade David, Education Secretary of Ibadan North West Local Government Area, commended the initiative, emphasizing that children are the nation’s future and must be empowered to protect and pursue their dreams diligently.
The programme also received support from Mrs. Ayodeni Aluko, Media Coordinator of Bright Lens Media Networks, the initiator of the campaign. She called on parents to actively support their children’s education by providing necessary learning materials and collaborating with teachers and government officials to ensure functional education.
During the campaign, the school pupils were presented with writing books, snacks, and souvenirs. Additionally, six student-led societies were inaugurated, focusing on Health, Security, Environment, Press, Quiz, and Literary Debate, to encourage participation, leadership, and skill development among the students.
The initiative reflects a growing commitment among public officeholders and civil society actors to ensure that young Nigerians, particularly those in public schools, have access to guidance, mentorship, and the resources needed to realise their full potential.
