A legal practitioner and human rights activist, Femi Aborisade, has warned that the ongoing leadership dispute within the African Democratic Congress [ADC] may affect the party’s ability to participate effectively in the 2027 presidential election.
Aborisade said the litigation instituted by Rafiu Bala-Gombe challenging the emergence of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola as interim national chairman and secretary of the party, respectively, has created fresh legal uncertainty.
The suit, filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, is currently before the court, following a ruling by the Court of Appeal which ordered accelerated hearing and directed parties to maintain the status quo.
Aborisade noted that the legal tussle, if not resolved promptly, could hinder the party’s ability to meet critical requirements set by the Independent National Electoral Commission for participation in the electoral process.
He explained that under the Electoral Act, only recognised party officials are empowered to submit candidate lists and other statutory documents to the electoral body.
The lawyer also raised concerns over the handling of the case, arguing that disputes relating to internal affairs of political parties are restricted under the Electoral Act.
According to him, the interpretation of the court’s directive on maintaining the status quo has further complicated the situation, particularly in relation to the recognition of party leadership.
He urged that relevant parties should seek clarity from the court to avoid actions that could undermine the party’s standing in the electoral process.
Aborisade added that the situation underscores the need for reforms in the Electoral Act to provide clearer pathways for resolving internal party disputes without jeopardising participation in elections.
