A human rights lawyer and chieftain  of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Barrister Niyi Aborisade, on Sunday called for restraint in the ongoing tension in Oyo State, urging all parties involved in the face-off between Governor Seyi Makinde and the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, to sheathe their swords in the interest of peace and stability.

Aborisade, who is governorship aspirant,  said a healthy political environment must, at times, accommodate conflict and differing views, but warned that the current situation risks escalating beyond acceptable bounds, especially as it involves a revered traditional institution.

He expressed concern over the alleged exchanges between the state governor and the Olubadan, describing the development as unfortunate given the sacred position of the throne in Yoruba tradition.

According to him, traditional rulers should remain above partisan politics and serve as fathers to all political actors in the state, stressing that such neutrality is essential to preserving the sanctity and dignity of the stool.

“The Olubadan must remain a father to all. Under normal circumstances, the traditional institution should not be drawn into political disputes,” he said.

Aborisade urged restraint from all stakeholders, calling for calm and reconciliation to prevent further deterioration of relations between political and traditional authorities in the state.

He noted that with the 2027 general elections approaching, political tensions are expected to rise, warning that the period will likely produce intense competition and heightened political rhetoric across the country.

“The 2027 election is drawing very near and the heat is on. We must be prepared, as it will bring out many issues and tensions,” he added.

Despite the political atmosphere, the ADC chieftain expressed confidence in his party’s prospects in Oyo State, declaring that the African Democratic Congress would secure victory in the governorship election.

“I am confident that the ADC will clear the votes in Oyo State, and by the grace of God, I will emerge as the next governor of the state,” he said.

He further pledged that, if elected, his administration would foster a harmonious relationship between the state government and traditional institutions across Oyo State, ensuring respect, collaboration and mutual understanding.

“There will be a good relationship between the state and all the kings in Oyo State,” he assured.
