About the 6th Inaugural lecturer, Professor David Akinyiwola Opeyemi
Professor David Akinyiwola Opeyemi, is an internationally recognised scholar and expert in Structural Reliability, Risk, and Maintenance Engineering. His research focuses on the modelling, quantification, and management of uncertainties in ageing infrastructure, particularly pipelines, bridges, and critical systems exposed to extreme environmental conditions.
His work has contributed significantly to reliability analysis, risk assessment, and robust engineering design, especially in addressing the challenges posed by climate and environmental change. His research collaborations and scholarly engagements span Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America.
Born on December 18, 1963, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Nigeria, Professor Opeyemi obtained a National Diploma in Civil Engineering from Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, in 1986, a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Ilorin in 1991, a Master of Engineering in Structural Engineering from the Federal University of Technology Akure in 2010, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering from the University of Liverpool in 2016.
He began his professional engineering career with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and later worked with notable engineering organisations, including PROFEN Consultants Inc., SHON Nigeria Limited, and SMACE Nigeria Limited, where he contributed to several infrastructure and development projects across Nigeria, including erosion and flood control works, institutional infrastructure, staff housing developments, jetties, and offshore structures.
Professor Opeyemi has also participated in notable international engagements, including the 100+ Forum Russia for High-Rise and Special Construction for Olympic Games 2015 in Ekaterinburg, Russia, and Expo Milano 2015 in Italy.
His academic career commenced at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, in 2005, where he rose to the rank of Principal Lecturer. He later served as Teaching Assistant at the University of Liverpool during his doctoral studies between 2015 and 2017 and subsequently held academic positions at Landmark University, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, where he became Reader (Associate Professor) in 2022.
In October 2024, he was appointed Professor at Achievers University, Owo, where he currently serves as Head of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He also chairs strategic institutional committees, including the Accreditation Monitoring Committee and the Special Project Monitoring Team overseeing major infrastructure development within the University.
An accomplished researcher and academic leader, Professor Opeyemi has published over 50 scholarly articles in reputable international journals and has presented research papers at conferences across Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. He also serves as reviewer and editorial contributor to several international journals and conferences.
He is a Registered Engineer with COREN and a Fellow of both the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (FNICE). He is also affiliated with several international professional organisations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), the International Civil Engineering Risk and Reliability Association (CERRA), RILEM, and IAENG.
For Achievers University, the lecture forms part of its commitment to advancing knowledge, promoting innovative research, and fostering intellectual conversations that address contemporary global challenges and support the sustainable development goals.
