EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF HANDOVER REPORT OF THE AG. VICE-CHANCELLOR, ACHIEVERS UNIVERSITY, OWO, PROFESSOR OYESOJI AREMU, cf., fspsp, fcasson, MNAE, JP
Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State established in 2007 as had four substantive Vice-Chancellors, Professors Johnson Adebayo Odebiyi, Engr. Professor T. Samuel Ibiyemi, Professor Samuel Oyebanji Aje, and presently, Professor Omolola Oladunni Irinoye who stepped aside to formalise her official disengagement from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. This entrusted upon me the administration of the University in acting capacity for eight months. Thus, as the Ag. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amos Oyesoji Aremu administered the University between December 1, 2025 and July 31, 2026 upon being appointed by the Governing Council of the University. Within the period, the University remains academically and administratively stable in spite of the few challenges especially the fraud saga discovered in April, 2026 having been in on since 2023/2024 academic session. The 2025/2026 academic session in which the period falls in was a huge success in spite of this. The following, sum up in five paragraphs are the key interventions during the period:
I assumed office on 1 December 2025, twelve days prior to the 15th Convocation Ceremony and 19th Founders Day. During the period under review, the University maintained full academic and administrative operations. Key governance decisions were implemented, including Senate approval of the Policy on Name Rendering and Seating Arrangements, and the rescheduling of Convocation Day to 24 October to align with the Federal Government’s approval date for the establishment of the University. Several committees were constituted to strengthen internal processes, notably the Joint Achievers University and Federal Medical Centre Implementation Committee.
Academic and quality assurance activities were sustained. Three Inaugural Lectures were delivered (the last was held in 2022), and regular public lectures were held across faculties. New academic gowns were procured for inaugural and public lectures. The University secured full accreditation for the MBBS programme with an approved quota of 120 students. This represents a major milestone in the continued development of the College of Medicine and significantly enhances the University’s capacity to contribute to medical education in Nigeria. Postgraduate programmes were strengthened, with emphasis on quality assured mechanisms especially in respect of PhD programmes. Concerted efforts were made to start Distance Education and eLearning. Consequent on this, full Course materials on Bachelor of Nursing have been produced. Research visibility of the University was enhanced through efforts made to register on Times Higher Education, an acclaimed world University rankings body.
Staff matters and institutional development were also addressed through new Promotion Guidelines and approval of CV formats for Academic and Non-Teaching Staff. These were used for 2025/2026 promotion exercises. These promotions were concluded, including the elevation of two academic staff to the rank of Reader, and five Prima facie qualified readership cases. Several other academic and non-teaching staff were also promoted.
Infrastructure projects were executed, ICT and security architecture were upgraded, and 30 seedling trees were planted at the Faculty of Technology and Engineering under the campus greening programme. In addition to this, another 108 seedling trees were planted across the University. Student development was supported through the Red Cross Society and Nigerian Cadet Network.
The University recorded several honours and distinctions during the period. The modest achievements were made possible through the support of the Pro-Chancellor, Council, Senate, Management, staff, and students. The University is handed over as a stable and functional institution.
