The Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Dr Taiwo Abideen Lasisi, has pledged to transform the institution before the end of his tenure, saying his longstanding relationship with the polytechnic has given him a deep understanding of its operations and challenges.
Lasisi made the pledge while speaking with journalists after receiving an award at the just concluded Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council’s Press Week and 60th anniversary celebration in Ibadan.
The event, held at Jogor Event Centre, had the theme, “Oyo NUJ at 60: Celebrating the Past, Defending the Present and Shaping the Future.”
The rector said his commitment to transforming the institution was driven by his personal attachment to it, having spent a significant part of his career there.
“I am part and parcel of the polytechnic. I was moved inside that polytechnic, and so I see the in and out of the institution. By the grace of God, I will transform The Polytechnic, Ibadan, before the end of my tenure,” he said.
Describing the award, which coincided with his 68th birthday, as recognition of his leadership and transformative contributions, Lasisi expressed appreciation to the NUJ for acknowledging his efforts.
He pledged to sustain his commitment to inspiring people and making meaningful contributions wherever he found himself.
The rector also described the media as an important partner in societal development, urging journalists to uphold accuracy, fairness and balanced reporting, particularly ahead of the forthcoming elections.
He said journalists played a critical role in shaping society and providing direction for governance, describing them as indispensable to the effective functioning of institutions.
“Journalists are the ones shaping any country in the world. In fact, without journalists, it is like having a ship without a compass,” he said.
Lasisi also urged media practitioners to embrace constructive criticism, noting that responsible journalism would help public office holders and institutions identify their shortcomings, make necessary corrections and take appropriate decisions.
