The Governing Council of the University of Medical Sciences has approved the promotion of six academic staff to higher professorial ranks following its extraordinary meeting held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
According to the university, five Readers were elevated to the rank of Professor, while one Senior Lecturer was promoted to Reader.
The newly appointed Professors are Lawal Adewale Oyeneyin and Michael Olumide Gbala of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Joshua Olajire Babayemi of the Department of Biosciences and Biotechnology; Esosa Samuel Uhumwangho of the Department of Biochemistry; and Adegbiji Waheed Atilade of the Department of Surgery.
Also promoted is Dr Kayode Olayiwola Adepoju of the Department of Health Information Management, who rose from Senior Lecturer to the rank of Reader.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Aderonke Adejuyigbe, described the promotions as a reflection of sustained academic excellence, impactful research, and dedicated service to the institution and society at large.
She noted that the beneficiaries had distinguished themselves through scholarship and professional contributions, adding that their elevation underscores the university’s commitment to academic distinction and innovation.
Professor Adejuyigbe congratulated the newly promoted academics and urged them to see their elevation as a call to greater responsibility in advancing knowledge and strengthening institutional development.
She added that their expertise remains crucial to national development and the global academic community, encouraging them to continue inspiring younger scholars.
According to the university, the promotion of the five Professors takes effect from October 1, 2023, while that of the Reader is effective from April 15, 2026.
