An aide to a former Minister of Power and governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has dismissed reports suggesting that his principal resigned against the wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The aide, Femi Awogboro, stated that Adelabu obtained the full consent and blessing of the President before taking the decision to step down from office.

In a statement, Awogboro said Adelabu’s action was consistent with his long-standing commitment to public service and personal sacrifice, noting that he had previously relinquished a high-profile position as Deputy Governor (Operations) at the Central Bank of Nigeria in pursuit of broader service to the people. He urged those circulating contrary claims to desist, describing such assertions as unfounded and politically motivated.

According to him, critics unsettled by Adelabu’s growing popularity in Oyo State have resorted to spreading misinformation, particularly following the large turnout that welcomed him to Ibadan last Thursday.

Awogboro maintained that the current political climate reflects a groundswell of support for Adelabu, with residents across the state urging him to provide leadership anchored on a shared vision of restoring Oyo’s status as the Pace Setter. He said Adelabu’s decision to resign was driven by a genuine passion to serve, stressing that stepping aside from office when necessary has never been a difficult choice for him.

“Chief Adelabu does not take major decisions lightly. He consistently seeks divine guidance and also values the counsel of his father and mentor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

Awogboro emphasised that the resignation was neither abrupt nor contentious, but rather a deliberate move taken with the President’s full knowledge, approval and support. He added that calls for Adelabu’s leadership have continued to grow across the state, citing his track record, grassroots connection, and commitment to local government development.

Highlighting what he described as a demonstration of widespread acceptance, Awogboro pointed to the reception that greeted Adelabu’s arrival at Alakia Airport in Ibadan on April 23, where supporters from all 33 local government areas reportedly turned out in large numbers.

He said the show of support underscored Adelabu’s increasing appeal ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
