The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has called on Yoruba scholars to intensify efforts at documenting and preserving the history, culture and exploits of past heroes to prevent the erosion of the Yoruba people’s rich heritage.

The monarch made the call while receiving members of the family of the renowned 19th-century Yoruba warrior, Balogun Odeyinka Oderinlo, during a courtesy visit to his palace in Oyo.

Speaking during the visit, the Alaafin said preserving the memories of Yoruba heroes was essential for strengthening cultural identity, promoting moral values and inspiring future generations.

He lamented that many Africans had developed a distorted perception of their history and culture, leading to inadequate appreciation of the achievements of their forebears.

According to him, documenting the lives, exploits and philosophies of notable Yoruba heroes would help bridge the gap between the past and the present while educating young people about their roots and cultural identity.

The monarch described the event as part of ongoing efforts to ensure that the contributions of the Yoruba people to civilisation and nation-building are not consigned to oblivion.

He said the gathering was not only to celebrate Balogun Oderinlo’s legacy but also to promote unity, peace and harmony among the Yoruba people.

Oba Owoade noted that descendants of the late warrior were being formally recognised as members of the wider Oyo royal family, while a distinguished member of the family was honoured with a traditional Yoruba war title in recognition of Balogun Oderinlo’s outstanding contributions to the defence of Yorubaland.

“Balogun Oderinlo remains a pride to the Yoruba race. His courage, patriotism and sacrifice deserve to be preserved for generations yet unborn,” the monarch said.

Responding on behalf of the family, the head of the Oderinlo family, Mogaji Kabir Adegboyega Oderinlo, expressed appreciation to the Alaafin for recognising the sacrifices of their illustrious ancestor.

He lamented that despite Balogun Oderinlo’s immense contributions to the defence and emancipation of Yorubaland, his legacy and descendants had long been neglected.

According to him, the honour bestowed by the Alaafin represents a significant step towards restoring the historical recognition deserved by the late warrior.

“We are deeply grateful for this rare honour. Kabiyesi is the first paramount ruler in Yorubaland to celebrate and immortalise the contributions of Balogun Oderinlo and his family,” he said.

Balogun Oderinlo was one of the most celebrated military commanders in 19th-century Yorubaland. Following the collapse of the Old Oyo Empire, he relocated to Ibadan, where he rose through the ranks of the Ibadan war establishment and became one of the foremost defenders of the Yoruba nation.

Historical accounts credit him with playing a significant role in the 1840 Jalumi War, particularly during the famous Battle of Osogbo, where the combined Yoruba forces defeated the Fulani army, halting its expansion into the Yoruba interior and preserving the political independence of much of Yorubaland.

The late warrior’s family compound is located in the Agbongbon/Ojaba area of Ibadan, while a statue erected in his honour stands at Beere, near Mapo Hall.

The event also featured the presentation of a book on Balogun Oderinlo written by Barrister Niyi Aborisade.
