A doctoral student of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, Miss Kayode Stella, has been awarded the Adesegun Fatusi Alumni Research Grant, a research support initiative established by the UNIMED Alumni Association to promote innovative scientific research within the university community.
Kayode, a PhD candidate in Genetics and Biotechnology, received the grant in recognition of the potential impact of her research on strengthening infectious disease surveillance in Nigeria through cutting-edge genomic science.
Her research focuses on advancing dengue genomic surveillance and improving diagnostic approaches to enhance the country’s capacity for early detection, monitoring, and response to dengue outbreaks. The study is expected to provide valuable scientific evidence that will support public health interventions and disease control strategies.
Speaking on the significance of her research, the award recipient said: “Impactful science begins with the courage to ask meaningful questions, and behind every research question is a community waiting for meaningful evidence to improve public health.”
She added that the support from the UNIMED Alumni Association would enable her to deepen the scope of the research and contribute meaningful scientific evidence toward combating emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in Nigeria.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe congratulated the award recipient on the achievement, describing it as a reflection of the university’s growing reputation for research excellence and innovation.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, “This achievement underscores the quality of our postgraduate training and the commitment of our students to addressing real-life health challenges through impactful research. We are proud of Miss Kayode Stella for bringing honour to the university, and we commend the UNIMED Alumni Association for investing in research that has the potential to improve public health and national development.”
The UNIMED Alumni Association also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting academic excellence through strategic interventions that empower researchers and young scholars.
In a statement, the Alumni Association President, Adedayo Adesida said the Adesegun Fatusi Alumni Research Grant was established to encourage innovative research capable of generating practical solutions to pressing healthcare and developmental challenges.
“The Alumni Association believes that investing in research is an investment in the future of healthcare and national development. We are delighted to support Miss Kayode Stella’s important work on dengue surveillance and diagnostics, and we hope this grant will inspire other young researchers to pursue innovative ideas that make meaningful contributions to society,” the Association stated.
The Association also noted that supporting outstanding students and researchers remains one of its key priorities as it continues to strengthen the bond between alumni and the university while contributing to the institution’s academic advancement.
