In a country where politics is defined by spectacle, grandstanding and relentless self-promotion, the value of quiet, purposeful leadership often goes unnoticed. History is replete with stories that societies are transformed not by the loudest voices but by those whose actions speak louder than rhetoric. In the light of this, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi, the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) governorship candidate for the 2027 Oyo State election, presents an example of leadership rooted in service, competence and measurable impact.
Across Nigeria, citizens are becoming weary of leaders who mistake visibility for effectiveness. The demand today is for leadership that delivers results, creates opportunities, responds to challenges and remains connected to the grassroots. It is this expectation that makes Adekanmbi’s public service record worthy of reflection.
Long before emerging as a governorship contender, Adekanmbi had established himself as a development-focused administrator with a keen understanding of governance as a tool for social transformation. His contributions during the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi remain among the most notable examples of this commitment.
Obviously, no initiative better illustrates his dedication to youth development than the Youth Employment Scheme of Oyo State (YES-O). At a time when youth unemployment posed a significant social and economic challenge, the programme engaged 20,000 young people across the state, providing work experience, income opportunities and a sense of purpose. Needless to say, YES-O demonstrated how deliberate public policy can reduce vulnerability, promote social stability and unlock human potential.
Adekanmbi’s involvement in the World Bank-supported Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO) reinforced his ability to connect local needs with global development opportunities. Through the programme, vulnerable citizens benefited from social protection initiatives while employment opportunities expanded for young people. It reflected a broader understanding that sustainable development requires both economic empowerment and social inclusion.
The financial expert also played a significant role in strengthening collaboration between Oyo State and international development partners during the implementation of the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project. At a critical period when concerns existed over project implementation and funding disbursement, he was entrusted with helping to stabilise relations between the state government and the World Bank. The resulting partnership contributed to interventions aimed at addressing flooding challenges in Ibadan and highlighted the importance of effective leadership in development administration.
Clearly, Adekanmbi’s record extends beyond large-scale programmes and institutional partnerships. It easily connects to everyday realities. Across communities, his interventions have focused on practical needs that directly affect people’s lives. Community roads have improved accessibility and commerce, transformers have enhanced electricity supply in under-served areas, while boreholes have expanded access to potable water.
These may not be the projects that generate dramatic headlines, but they represent the essence of governance: improving the quality of life for ordinary citizens.
Education has also remained central to Adekanmbi’s development philosophy. He has helped remove financial barriers that often prevent talented young people from pursuing their aspirations through the annual payment of WAEC and JAMB fees for numerous students. His scholarship initiatives, Bursary and support for academic excellence reflect a belief that investment in education remains one of the most effective tools for social mobility.
The governorship standard-bearer’s commitment to youth empowerment goes beyond formal education. He demonstrated a practical approach to empowerment that combines skills acquisition with economic opportunity by sponsoring 100 youths for technical and vocational training to the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University (TechU) Ibadan, and providing seed grants upon completion. He also organised skills acquisition programmes for the underprivileged and provided support upon completion of the training.
Such interventions recognise that development is not merely about distributing resources but about equipping individuals with the tools to become self-reliant contributors to society.
Also, establishing IncubHub in Ibadan further reflected this vision. Designed as a technology incubation centre, the initiative provided a platform for young innovators and entrepreneurs to develop ideas capable of addressing contemporary challenges. Although the COVID-19 pandemic affected its operations, the vision behind the project remains relevant in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
One of the most telling aspects of Adekanmbi’s leadership has been his responsiveness during periods of crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he engaged directly with communities, promoted public health awareness and distributed relief materials to vulnerable residents. He also extended support to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, recognising the critical role of healthcare institutions during emergencies.
Again, following the Bodija explosion tragedy, he demonstrated solidarity with affected residents by providing equipment and financial support for relief efforts, demonstrating a leadership style rooted in empathy, responsibility and practical intervention.
Aside from projects and programmes, Adekanmbi’s greatest strength may well be his connection to the grassroots. Years of engagement with community leaders, artisans, traders, farmers and young people have given him a deep understanding of the challenges facing ordinary citizens. His tenure as Chairman of the Community and Social Development Agency provided valuable exposure to grassroots governance and community-driven development, helping to shape a leadership philosophy anchored on listening, accessibility and responsiveness.
This grassroots connection helps explain why his appeal often transcends political affiliations. Even outside government, many young people continued to identify with him because they viewed him not merely as a politician but as someone invested in their growth and advancement.
Being appointed as President of the Oyo State Scout Council reinforced his longstanding commitment to youth development and civic responsibility. At a time when society faces growing concerns about declining values and youth disengagement, initiatives that promote discipline, leadership, community service and responsible citizenship have become important.
On the whole, leadership should not be judged by the volume of campaign promises but by the depth of impact created over time. Public trust is earned through competence, consistency and genuine service.
Whether one agrees with every policy of the administrations in which he served, Adekanmbi’s contributions to youth development and social intervention remain difficult to ignore.
As Oyo State looks ahead to the 2027 governorship election and debates the kind of leadership needed to sustain development, the records of those seeking public trust will inevitably come under scrutiny. In that conversation, Bimbo Adekanmbi’s years of investment in youth empowerment, social development, infrastructure, education and community engagement present a compelling case study in results-oriented leadership. He offers a different proposition: leadership defined not by applause, but by impact.
