“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” Afod wrote.
“Rest well, sir. Your work lives on.”

The family also confirmed his death in an official statement signed by Adewale Oyewo, noting that the veteran actor died after a brief illness.

According to the statement, Oyewo—popularly known for his role in Saworoide—lived a life defined by purpose, faith, dedication, and service to humanity.

“Chief (Dr.) Gabriel Adekola Oyewo lived a life of purpose, faith, dedication, and service. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, and friend whose wisdom, kindness, and exemplary character positively influenced the lives of many,” the statement read.

It added that his legacy of integrity, hard work, and commitment to family and community would remain enduring values for those he left behind.

“As we give thanks to God for the gift of his life and the many blessings he bestowed upon us through him, we celebrate the remarkable impact he made during his eighty years on earth. Though he will be greatly missed, we are comforted by the memories, values, and enduring legacy he leaves behind.”

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, marking the beginning of a career that would span decades across stage, film, and academia.

He rose to prominence as one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre, earning widespread acclaim for his powerful portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that cemented his reputation across the African theatre landscape.

Academically accomplished, Oyewo studied at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned certificates in Dramatic Arts and Yoruba Oral Literature, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts in 1995. He later proceeded to the University of Ibadan, obtaining a Master’s degree and a doctorate in Drama.

Beyond the stage and screen, Oyewo also distinguished himself as an academic. He joined Obafemi Awolowo University in 1996 as a lecturer, rising to the rank of senior lecturer before retiring in 2011.

After his retirement, he continued teaching at Redeemer’s University, where he served as Head of the Department of Dramatic Arts, and later at Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, as a lecturer in Performing Arts.

With a career that seamlessly blended artistic excellence and academic mentorship, Kola Oyewo leaves behind a legacy deeply rooted in theatre, scholarship, and cultural preservation.
