Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged students of the University of Ibadan School of Business (UISB) to embrace integrity, initiative and resilience as critical attributes for success in leadership, entrepreneurship and professional life.
Obasanjo gave the advice during a networking luncheon organised at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, as part of a two-day educational field trip undertaken by students of the School of Business.
The former President, who interacted extensively with the students, challenged them to believe in themselves, pursue excellence and remain steadfast in the pursuit of their goals despite challenges and setbacks.
According to him, success in life is not determined solely by academic qualifications but by character, discipline, vision and the willingness to take initiative.
He urged the students to cultivate values that would distinguish them as responsible leaders and professionals capable of making meaningful contributions to society.
Obasanjo stressed that integrity remains one of the most valuable assets any individual can possess, noting that trust, credibility and accountability are indispensable in both business and public service.
He also urged the students to develop a spirit of innovation and self-confidence, advising them not to wait for opportunities but to create them through hard work, creativity and determination.
The interaction formed a major highlight of the educational excursion designed to expose students to practical learning experiences beyond the traditional classroom environment.
They described the engagement as inspiring and insightful, noting that the opportunity to learn directly from one of Nigeria’s most prominent statesmen provided valuable lessons on leadership and personal development.
Also, the students participated in structured networking sessions that enabled them to exchange ideas, explore career opportunities and build professional relationships.
The field trip also featured a guided tour of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, where participants explored historical exhibits documenting Nigeria’s political evolution, governance milestones and leadership journey.
Students visited the iconic Olumo Rock, gaining insights into the history, culture and resilience of the Egba people.
An academic session facilitated by Mr Chinedu Nwulia of the University of Ibadan School of Business also highlighted the importance of networking, personal branding and strategic relationship-building in career advancement.
The field trip was organised as part of UISB’s commitment to experiential learning and professional development.
Officials of the School of Business said the initiative reflects the institution’s determination to produce graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with practical skills, leadership capacity and industry exposure.
The programme was coordinated under the leadership of the MBA Students Association and the Entrepreneurship Students Association, with support from the management and faculty of the School of Business.
Led by the Head of Department, Dr. Omitoyin Siyanbola, the school continues to promote innovative learning experiences aimed at preparing students for the realities of today’s dynamic business environment.
For many participants, the excursion served as a reminder that success in the modern workplace requires more than technical knowledge; it demands integrity, initiative, adaptability and the ability to build meaningful professional relationships.
