A United Kingdom-based legal practitioner and human rights advocate, Barrister Niyi Aborisade (BANA), on Sunday called on the Federal Government to strengthen the nation’s security architecture to prevent a recurrence of the recent abduction of pupils, teachers and other passengers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

While commending the Federal Government and security agencies for the successful rescue of the abductees, Aborisade maintained that the incident exposed serious deficiencies in the country’s security system that require urgent attention.

In a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan, the lawyer described the rescue operation as commendable but insisted that the government must focus more on preventing such incidents than responding after they occur.

He said the successful rescue should not divert attention from the need to overhaul the nation’s security framework, warning that Nigerians deserve better protection from criminal elements.

“The rescue of the abductees is commendable, and I appreciate the efforts of the Federal Government and the security agencies. However, our security architecture remains very poor. Government must ensure that incidents like this never occur again,” he said.

Aborisade urged the authorities to put in place adequate security measures across the country, particularly in vulnerable and volatile communities where kidnapping and other violent crimes have become prevalent.

He also advocated increased deployment of patrol vehicles to identified flashpoints, saying regular security patrols would serve as a deterrent to criminal activities and improve public confidence in the nation’s security system.

According to him, the primary responsibility of government is to protect lives and property, stressing that effective intelligence gathering, improved surveillance and rapid response mechanisms are critical to preventing future attacks.

He called on the Federal Government to sustain efforts to reform the security sector to ensure that citizens can go about their daily activities without fear of abduction or other violent crimes.
