The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, has joined academics and professionals across Nigeria in celebrating the elevation of Professor M.C. Asuzu to the prestigious rank of Emeritus Professor by the University of Ibadan (UI).
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, described the conferment as a well-deserved recognition of Asuzu’s outstanding contributions to medical education, public health and human capital development.
Professor Adejuyigbe, in her congratulatory message, said Asuzu’s elevation was not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the enduring impact of his scholarship, mentorship and service to institutions of learning.
“Professor Asuzu is a distinguished scholar whose footprints are firmly etched in the development of public health education and practice in Nigeria. His elevation to Emeritus Professor is richly deserved, and we at UNIMED are proud to have benefited from his wealth of experience and wisdom,” she said.
She acknowledged his invaluable contributions to the growth of UNIMED since 2016, noting his strategic interventions in strengthening the School of Public Health and the Postgraduate School.
A Professor of Disciplinary Public Health and Community Medicine at UI since 1995, Asuzu also served as a consultant population and clinical epidemiologist, community and occupational physician at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, from 1987.
He became an adjunct professor at UNIMED in October 2016, proceeded on sabbatical in November 2017 and extended leave in December 2018. Since December 2020, he has continued his service to the University under a post-retirement contract.
His scholarship spans population and clinical epidemiology, occupational health, health policy and management, as well as adolescent and family-life education and services.
Professor Adejuyigbe said UNIMED would continue to cherish Asuzu’s legacy of teaching, mentorship, research and selfless service, describing him as “a model of scholarship in spirit and truth.”
