Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and the Ogun State Government have restated their commitment to strengthening electricity infrastructure and improving power supply across the state through strategic collaboration and fresh investments in the energy sector.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the board and management of IBEDC to Dapo Abiodun at the Government House.
The IBEDC delegation was led by board member, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, alongside another board member, Mr. Tunde Fayinka, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr. Deolu Ijose.
Speaking during the engagement, Afolabi described the transition to new core investors in IBEDC as a major turning point for the company, noting that it would pave the way for increased investments aimed at improving electricity infrastructure and service delivery across its franchise areas, particularly Ogun State.
According to him, the company remains committed to supporting economic growth and industrial development through improved power distribution and enhanced operational efficiency.
Ijose, in his presentation, highlighted the strategic importance of Ogun State within the IBEDC network due to its rapid industrialisation, growing population and rising energy demand.
He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between IBEDC and the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission to create a sustainable and investment-friendly electricity market framework.
The managing director also identified several areas requiring government support, including the licensing of Olumo Electricity Distribution Company Plc as IBEDC’s Ogun subsidiary, harmonisation of franchise boundaries, and reduction of regulatory overlaps within the electricity market.
He further sought support for Right-of-Way approvals, protection of electricity infrastructure against vandalism and sabotage, as well as the development of industrial power corridors to support businesses and manufacturing activities in the state.
Among the strategic projects highlighted by the company are the Redeem 33kV Feeder, Magada 33kV Feeder, and the Double Circuit 33kV Feeder from Oke-Aro to Magboro.
Ijose said the projects would significantly improve power reliability and energy access for industries and residential communities across Ogun State.
Responding, Governor Abiodun assured the company of the state government’s readiness to collaborate with IBEDC to improve electricity supply and support ongoing reforms in the power sector.
The governor also disclosed that the state was considering stricter laws and enforcement mechanisms to tackle vandalism and protect critical electricity infrastructure.
He added that the government intends to strengthen regulatory oversight within the electricity market to ensure that only credible and technically competent operators are licensed to operate in the state.
According to him, the state would also develop a clear roadmap for electricity market regulation to guarantee transparency, efficiency and sustainable growth within the sector.
