A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced three persons convicted for the kidnapping of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to life imprisonment.
The court found the three defendants guilty of their roles in the abduction, which sparked widespread outrage, heightened security concerns and threw residents of the affected community into panic.
Delivering judgment, the court held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently sentenced each of the convicts to life imprisonment.
The judgment has been welcomed as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes, particularly attacks targeting schools and vulnerable communities.
It also offers a measure of justice and relief to the victims, their families and residents of Oyo State, while reinforcing the commitment of the judiciary and security agencies to ensuring that perpetrators of kidnapping face the full weight of the law.
The conviction is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts by security agencies and the government to curb kidnapping and improve public safety across the country.
