The union, in a follow-up statement issued on Saturday, expressed deep concern over the continued captivity of the victims, saying the latest footage showing some of the abducted teachers appealing for their freedom had heightened anxiety among families, colleagues and members of the public.
NUT said the development underscored the urgent need for intensified rescue efforts by government and security agencies to secure the immediate release of all those held captive.
According to the union, days after its initial outcry over the abductions, the emergence of another video showing the victims in traumatic conditions had made the situation even more distressing.
“The Union views this development as both heartbreaking, barbaric and unacceptable. No child or teacher deserves to endure such terror,” the statement said.
It noted that the prolonged captivity of the victims was inflicting severe psychological pain on their families, the school community and the teaching profession.
The union called for expedited and more decisive actions from the government and relevant security agencies, stressing that the situation required coordinated and intelligence-driven interventions.
“This is not a moment for hesitation. It is a moment for coordinated, intelligence-driven effort to ensure the immediate and safe release of all abducted pupils and teachers,” it stated.
While acknowledging ongoing efforts by the government and security operatives, the NUT stressed that time was of the essence, warning that every additional day the victims remained in captivity deepened their trauma and raised concerns about their welfare.
The union urged authorities to intensify surveillance, strengthen community intelligence gathering and deploy all necessary operational resources, including diplomatic approaches, to secure the safe return of the abductees.
It also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders and residents to support security agencies with credible information that could aid rescue operations.
“The safety of our children and teachers must remain a collective priority,” the union said.
NUT reiterated its solidarity with the families of the abducted pupils and teachers and pledged continued support during what it described as an agonising period.
The union restated its commitment to advocating safer learning environments, insisting that schools must remain places of learning and not targets of violent attacks.
“We demand swift and responsive action, renewed commitment and unwavering resolve from all authorities involved,” the statement added.
