The African Studies Students Association (ASSA), Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, is set to host the maiden edition of the Sankofa Conference, bringing together scholars, intellectuals, creatives and change-makers from different fields to discuss issues surrounding Africa’s past, present and future.
The conference, themed: “Collective Memory: Bodies and African Futures,” will hold from May 25 to 26, 2026, at the Lady Bank Anthony Hall, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan.
According to the organisers, the conference aims to create a platform for critical conversations on African identity, memory, culture and the future of the continent through interdisciplinary engagement and scholarly exchange.
Speaking on the conference, the President of the association, Alimi Quadril Ifayomi, stated that: “This year’s Sankofa Conference organised by the African Studies Students Association is a great opportunity for scholars from different fields to engage with how memories of Africa’s past can help build a greater future. History is not merely a pastime but a record through which societies can create a better future for themselves.
“The question is: do we still care to look back? Is this the great African continent we once had? These are some of the conversations that will unfold next week. Anticipate!”
The organisers noted that the event is expected to attract participants from within and outside Nigeria, including academics, researchers, students, artists and policy advocates interested in African studies and development discourse.
They added that the conference will feature intellectual discussions, panel sessions, cultural engagements and networking opportunities designed to promote deeper understanding of African realities and future possibilities.
The association also announced that partnership and brand promotion opportunities are available for interested organisations and individuals seeking to support the initiative.
